# Auckland Folk Festival carries the DIY musical spirit of multiple generations

Folk music has a proud history in New Zealand, and this spirit is deeply entrenched within Tāmaki Makaurau's annual celebration, Auckland Folk Festival. The largest dedicated folk music festival in Aotearoa, the event has an inclusive community feel and a level of ambition that reflects the growth, creativity and DIY ethos of our local scene.

It must be said, that in true Kiwi fashion, NZ folk artists punch well above their weight. This year's lineup spans the globe, with strong local representation right up there alongside the international talent. Notable inclusions are:

**Ny Oh (UK/NZ), Yurt Party (NZ), Tulua (IRE), Yaw Asumadu (GHA/NZ), Apolline (AUS), The Inadequates (AUS), Hinekoia Tomlinson (NZ), The Borough (AUS), The Jews Brothers (NZ), Jeff Davis (US/NZ), Lucy & Luisa (AUS), Simon Stanley (US/NZ), Niccolo Piccolo (NZ), Whangārei City Morris Dancers (NZ), Ethno NZ (NZ), dān dān 丹丹 (NZ)**

The festival has come a long way since it first started all the way back in 1973 at Mollers Farm in Oratia. What began as a weekend of camaraderie and singing has turned into a multi-day celebration of music, complete with a globally respected lineup and five stages for this year's event.

This change is a metaphor for the evolution of folk music in New Zealand. While we have always produced great folk music. What has changed is now our artists are taking their music to the world.

This year the line up includes a wide range of international artists, reflecting the festivals progress and also paying homage to the place Aotearoa's folk scene now holds on the international stage.

Today, the event that brings together musicians and audiences from across Aotearoa and further afield, providing a platform for traditional folk and contemporary interpretations of the genre to collide and interact across multiple generations.
