A new year is often an opportunity for a fresh start. The days stretch long, and people start asking quiet questions about who they are becoming. Psycho Gab’s latest single ‘Compass’ arrives open with that intent, a song that sounds like a group moving into who they are becoming.

Since forming in 2023, the five-piece have shaped a sound that draws from soul, RnB, jazz and pop without chasing any one lane. ‘Compass’ slips into that blend with ease . The groove stays soft and steady. The melodies float with care. It's a question about direction, yet it doesn't rush to give an answer. 

The band made the track by hand, recording using a single live room set up at The Lab with Olly Harmer. That same care flows into the video, shot on Super 8 film at Manukau Heads with long-time collaborator Gabriella Gillespie. The result is a closeness and authenticity - in an age of fast edits and clean shine, Psycho Gab choose touch, grain and time.

‘Compass’ shows a band growing into their voice without losing their roots in community and craft. For listeners, it offers a place to rest inside their own questions. It signals a group ready to shape the year ahead with care and confidence. Psycho Gab are not chasing direction anymore. They are learning how to make one.
