Tāmaki Makaurau’s most fearlessly bizarre electronic trio, Grecco Romank, return with ‘Chainlinks’, the latest single from their forthcoming album Arts Colony (out May 24). A towering collaboration, the track features a staggering lineup of guest vocalists from across Aotearoa’s underground, including Jazmine Mary, James Milne, Anthonie Tonnon, Yolanda Fagan, Lucy Suttor, David Feauai-Afaese, and more.

Described by the band as a “folk horror anthem”, ‘Chainlinks’ weaves doom guitars, acid synths, and a solemn marching rhythm into a ritualistic procession of voices. Each artist steps into a verse like a character in a haunted national anthem, before converging in a collective choral climax that feels both ancient and apocalyptic.

“Grecco were frighteningly ambitious and I wasn’t sure I’d get out of that recording session unscathed,” says Jazmine Mary. “It’s their world, we’re just pissing in it.”

The inspiration came from an old cassette tape found in a bin - an eerie recording of a woman practising a Latin hymn - its ghost now buried in the track’s DNA. The band, known for their “luxuriously bogan techno” and provocative live shows, describe the song as a reckoning with the gothic layers of New Zealand’s identity: part myth, part confession, and wholly unsettling.

The single offers a glimpse into Arts Colony, Grecco Romank’s third and most ambitious project yet. Alongside the album, they’ll release a [300+ page full-colour art book](https://greccoromank.bandcamp.com/merch/pre-order-arts-colony-the-book?ref=emptyspaces.co.nz) featuring contributions from 37 artists and writers across the country.
