Wellington producer Maz Hermon has worn many musical hats over the years, but with his latest project 9cups, he steps fully into the realm of heartfelt, groove-forward house music. His upcoming debut EP tee time 9pm is shaping up to be a quietly ambitious body of work that blends dancefloor sensibility with deep emotion and a distinct sense of place.
The latest single your love is the first sip. Warm, steady and soulful, it’s house music with its heart on its sleeve, built for kitchen parties, late-night mixes, or that golden-hour moment when the dancefloor suddenly feels like home. There’s a quiet nostalgia woven through the track, but it never leans too hard on the past. Instead, it lives in the now, celebrating that full-cup feeling of shared joy and connection.
This isn’t Hermon’s first rodeo. A longtime beatmaker and fixture of Aotearoa’s underground scene, his past projects include Western Dip, Mazroy, Roy G & the BIVinators and more. But 9cups feels different, more personal, more stripped-back, and more intent on moving people both physically and emotionally.
Influenced by the legacy of Chicago and Detroit club culture and grounded in Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s rich beat scene, the upcoming EP draws from years of sonic tinkering and late-night jam sessions on the locally made Deluge. It’s a project about letting go of perfection, committing to the process, and finding joy in music that doesn’t overthink its purpose.
You might catch dj9cups spinning in Wellington from time to time, slipping originals into his sets when the moment feels right, low-key and high-vibe.
