Em’s debut album, Phases, is a powerful and introspective work, capturing her personal journey through loss, grief, and self-discovery. Blending elements of indie, pop, and folk, the album features Em’s signature production style, combining hypnotic guitar riffs, atmospheric synths, and layered vocals. Each track on Phases delves deep into the emotional challenges she’s faced, resulting in an evocative exploration of resilience and healing.
The album’s lead single, “Reach Out,” offers listeners a glimpse into its contemplative mood. Anchored by soothing guitar loops and steady percussion, the song reflects on the feeling of yearning and late-night restlessness. Its production mirrors the emotions it evokes, with a rhythmic pulse that embodies the sense of longing for someone or something that’s no longer present. Recorded at Parachute Music, “Reach Out” showcases Em’s raw and authentic creative process, with a sound that feels both intimate and universal.
Reflecting on the track, Em shares, “The song came from my own experience with loss, but I quickly realised it captured a feeling many people could relate to. The blend of production and songwriting in this track brought a unique energy that sets it apart from my usual work.”
Phases also unites Em’s earlier works, Tender and Cloud City, while adding three new songs that complete the album’s overarching narrative. Begun in September 2022, the project reflects Em’s growth as an artist and the deep self-reflection she underwent during a challenging time. "The album is cyclic,” she explains. “It’s a representation of my internal journey and how it evolved over time.”
Entirely self-produced, recorded, and mixed by Em, Phases features contributions from Manuela Johnston (Big Tasty), Josh Johnston, Luan Meaker, Mackensie Clayton, and Josh Strand. Together, they’ve created a rich sonic experience that serves as both a personal reflection and a universal expression of grief and resilience.
