Ōtautahi alt-pop artist, producer, and APRA Silver Scroll nominee Emily C. Browning has unveiled her long-awaited debut album PRIMARY - an 11-track statement of intent, built over five years of fiercely independent creation.
Written, recorded, and produced largely from her home studio, PRIMARY is both a coming-of-age and a coming-into-power. It captures Browning’s transformation from an emerging songwriter to a fully formed artist with a sharp sonic and visual identity. Known for her red hair and emotionally direct lyrics, Browning leans into the symbolism of primary colours, primal instincts, and firsts. “I let go of the softie image and finally embodied the Aries I was meant to be,” she says.
The album charts everything from crushes and rejection to obsession and fury - with theatrical clarity and biting pop hooks. Singles like Goldfish (a Silver Scroll nominee), Not Done, and Analog highlight her growth as a self-producing artist, while early fan favourites Andy and I Wasn’t Into You Anyway mark the start of her evolution.
While the record is mostly solo, two key collaborations stand out: On Me, co-produced with LA artist Intrnet Boyfriend, and Fruit, co-written with Browning’s creative partner and best friend Phoebe Vic.
Equal parts confessional and explosive, PRIMARY is Browning’s unapologetic introduction - bold in sound, unfiltered in message, and impossible to ignore.
