Wellington alt-rock band Jazeerabad share 'Damsel (No Place for Secrets),' the standout track from their debut EP Narcissus. It’s a fast-paced, raw anthem diving deep into heartbreak, impulse, and the messy aftermath of loss.
Fronted by Mohammad Kunwar, Jazeerabad fused alternative rock with nu-metal, funk, and pop, creating a sound that’s loud, unpredictable, and unique. 'Damsel' follows Akbar, the troubled protagonist of the Narcissus storyline, as he spirals into reckless decisions to escape his pain. High-energy riffs and sharp dynamic shifts match the track’s desperate, no-filter lyrics.
“This is the opposite of a rational decision,” Kunwar explains. “Akbar’s acting out of pure instinct. He’s not trying to heal - he’s trying to feel something, anything.”
The music video, directed and animated by Amul Topiwala (Wagah Productions), is a layered visual trip packed with symbolism. Each chapter of the EP features a number woven subtly into the video. In 'Damsel,' keep your eyes peeled for the number 3.
Jazeerabad have already made waves with their first two singles, landing spots at #2 and #4 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart and performing at events like Hala and Newtown Festival. The band’s aesthetic is just as considered as their music, with EP artwork by Tom Saboo and photography by Aiden Fernando.
In 'Damsel,' Jazeerabad offer a chapter in a growing story, charged with raw emotion, creative ambition, and no interest in playing it safe.
