After years writing and playing in bands like Stormporter and Late Model European, Tones Thorburn is front and centre. His new solo project, True North, launches with the debut single ‘No Exit Wound’.
It’s a raw, soulful track that blends rock, gospel, and soul — with Thorburn’s voice leading the charge for the first time. Originally written for a female vocalist, it was producer Ben King who pushed Thorburn to take the mic himself. “He said he heard something,” Thorburn says. “Eventually I realised the only way these songs could work was if they came straight from me.”
‘No Exit Wound’ is personal — drawn from a tough health journey and grounded in faith, family, and survival. There’s pain here, but also clarity, strength, and hope.
Produced and mixed by King and featuring some of Aotearoa’s top musicians, the track sets the tone for a full EP coming later this year.
