Decades of discovery and delicate craftsmanship in Andy Smith's album Ten Years

Meticulously crafted over more than six years, and with a title that reflects a decade of personal discovery, Andy Smith’s album Ten Years is a clear example of how DIY music-making can evolve into an undeniably polished record. Written, produced, recorded, and mixed primarily by Andy himself, Ten Years takes listeners on a psychedelic journey, guided by shimmery slide guitar, lounging harmonica, and vulnerable lyricism exploring grief, identity, and love.

In an era dominated by technology, Andy’s music feels charmingly and refreshingly human. He explores fundamental, universal experiences with lyrics laced in subtle nuance and delivered with a delicate vocal touch. This is the perfect pairing for the dense, carefully considered instrumentation, unique and distinct in each song.

‘Endless Sea’ kicks off the record, dripping with nostalgia for the eras of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. This character remains threaded through the entire album, but not without moments of exploration into more dream-pop-leaning soundscapes, particularly on tracks ‘Go’ and ‘Twisted.’

Andy showcases the breadth of his creative capabilities with incredibly multifaceted songwriting and a range of references. We dive into different decades, yet the album remains cohesive and undeniably contemporary. ‘It’s Time’ could’ve been plucked from Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks. ‘Turning To You’ recalls America, while, and in stark contrast, ‘Jasmine flower’ nods to the playfulness of Sex on Toast.

Despite these touchstones, Andy maintains a distinctive musical identity. The journey from start to finish feels deeply personal and emotive. Musically, the outcome is familiar but exciting. There’s something to discover within every listen.

The album closes with ‘Control’ – an ode to over-thinking, consumerism and letting go. In almost comical contrast to the songs theme, it begins with bright solo ukulele, before transforming into a loose, bluesy waltz, capturing the emotional and musical complexity woven throughout Andy Smith’s songwriting.
