How nextWAV. aims to shape New Zealand’s upcoming wave of artists
Universal Music New Zealand has launched nextWAV., a new artist development programme built to support emerging talent at the start of their careers. The initiative responds to a clear gap in early-stage artist training, where music skills alone are no longer enough to build a lasting career. The programme brings together mentorship, workshops and industry access to help young artists understand the full scope of modern music making, from songwriting to branding and audience growth. We got the lowdown for our readers from co-creators Matt Kidd and Myra Hemara.
Please tell us more about nextWAV. ?
Matt: nextWAV. is a new artist development programme designed to identify and support the next generation of talent in Aotearoa. Through mentorship, workshops and industry guidance, participants will gain practical skills, creative development opportunities, and insights into building a career as a recording artist in today's music industry.
Why is this programme needed right now?
Myra: There is currently no programme of this kind in New Zealand that provides holistic artist development at such an early stage. Songwriting and recording remain fundamental, but today's artists also need an understanding of branding, audience engagement, digital platforms and live performance. nextWAV. brings these elements together to help prepare participants for the realities of a modern music career.
What is the biggest challenge emerging artists are facing in the industry today?
Matt: The music landscape is more competitive than ever. Artists are not only competing for attention against thousands of new releases every day, but are also navigating branding, content creation, live performance, and audience development alongside their music. nextWAV. is designed to help equip participants with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate that environment with confidence.
Who is the ideal candidate for the programme?
Matt: We're open to students creating music in any genre, who are ambitious, curious and have genuine commitment to developing as an artist. We want to support young people who are passionate about their craft and eager to learn.
How could nextWAV. help an artist set themselves up for a successful career?
Matt: nextWAV. is designed to be an early step in an artist's development. Participants will gain access to industry expertise, mentorship and practical experiences that can help them better understand their strengths, refine their creative direction, and build confidence in their artistic journey. Our goal is to provide a strong foundation that they can continue to build on long after the programme concludes.
Could the programme provide a pathway for artists to release music under the record label?
Matt: Participation in the programme does not include any contractual commitment to Universal Music New Zealand. The programme has been designed as an education, mentorship and development initiative, giving participants access to industry expertise, practical skills and professional networks that can support their future careers.
What happens to an artist once they have completed the programme?
Matt: While the formal programme runs for 12 months, our intention is to help participants build lasting industry relationships and connections that continue beyond the programme itself. We hope participants leave nextWAV. with greater confidence, knowledge, and a stronger network to support the next stage of their artistic journey.
