Rockquest success story Aisha and Bebe wrap warmth and wonder into second single Violet

Succeeding in the Smokefree Rockquest is no easy feat. As Aotearoa's nationwide original music competition for youth, the lineup is stacked with talented young musicians who give it everything they've got in a professional live performance setting.

Aisha and Bebe competed at last year's event and made it all the way to the national finals, where they placed second overall and took out the ZM Best Song Award for a little number they dropped last week, Violet.

Upon first listen, it fills the room with a familiar warmth. Like basking in the morning sunlight with a coffee in hand it picks you up and carries you along as it develops.

Clean, shimmering acoustic guitar sits enveloped in sparse, minimalist production textures that consume the listener in feeling. The vocals rise and uplift the whole piece, drawing from husky jazz soul and delicate country harmonies.

Lyrically, Violet is deeply human. It's plays like a meditation on connection, memory and the moments that stay with us long after they've passed. Never rushing to the punchline, it unfolds naturally, inviting listeners to find their own meaning between the lines.

The track leaves the listener in a state of reflection and completeness. Like all your worries have been shed, and replaced by hopeful optimism. It's a difficult feeling to capture in a song, yet Violet achieves it with a sense of ease.

Aisha and Bebe are an indie folk pop duo from Aotearoa creating harmony led, emotionally honest music with a polished edge. In 2025 they placed second at the Rockquest National Finals and have since supported Georgia Lines and Frankie Venter on tour. Their debut single Blank Space reached more than 10,000 streams in just two weeks.

If Violet is any indication of what's to come, those achievements may only be the beginning. The pair possess a songwriting maturity beyond their years and a rare ability to make simplicity feel profound. It's easy to see why they caught the attention of Rockquest judges. It's even easier to understand why listeners are beginning to pay attention too.
