Sophie Aston teaches us to rise from the flames of grief with Stardust
Following the release of her debut ‘Better,’ Waiheke-based singer-songwriter Sophie Aston returns with her latest single, ‘Stardust,’ an uplifting yet vulnerable and reflective exploration of grief and rebirth.
Sophie continues to affirm herself as an established songwriter with this track, using poetic lyricism to weave together symbols of fire, the changing of seasons, and evocative shades of crimson and turquoise. These themes propel the song forward from the moment it begins. Strong, confident vocals flow with momentum immediately, before any instrumental is introduced, representative of the tumultuous rush that internal mourning and anguish brings.
Sophie shares with listeners her struggle with an unfortunately universal experience – we all know what it’s like when our sadness envelops us so wholly that it feels like a heated flame we might never escape from. But instead of creating a sorrowful landscape, Sophie triumphs; her body her own, “powerful, regrown.” She presents this feeling of fire not as a figure of destruction, but as a force of inspiration, a burning of the past to make room for a different version of yourself.
Produced, mixed and mastered with Scott Seabright, the song transforms grief with a vigorous instrumental arrangement and a powerfully moving bridge, leaving listeners contemplating how our lives come from – and eventually return to – stardust.
