Suze Harper brings timeless soul into focus across a stunning four track run
A lot of songs come crashing in with hooks and hype. They're built to capture attention and engulf the listener in an immersive 'on trend' experience. It's a common theme seen in many of the tracks that land in our inbox.
Suze Harper goes in completely the other direction. Four singles. Together they become a body of work. All built on craft, feeling and a sense of timelessness - bestowing the notion that the music would maintain it's relevance through the passing of time from one era to the next.
The vibe is jazzy and effortless. Beneath the surface, the melodies are addictive. They creep up on you and reel you in without trying to do so. The songs are masterful - in their own right and together.
From the harmonic textures of 'Little One's Lullaby' to jovial groove of 'Anthony', Suze Harper's voice is smooth and powerful. The songwriting is considered, flowing with a natural ease both thematically and musically.
First track released, 'Not That Hard' is the pick of the bunch. It's a hybrid of the singles that followed, embodying all the qualities that make each stand apart. Rhythm, texture and soul.
The newest song, Lover's Lament perhaps carries the most meaning. There is a real sense of sought after connection throughout with the song twisting in unexpected melodies that end up carrying you on - a metaphor exposing the inspiration behind the music.
Suze Harper is a classically trained vocalist turned jazz, soul, blues and pop infused singer-songwriter. Raised on a farm in the South Island of New Zealand, she reconnected with music while studying law in Paris, performing in jazz clubs and on the streets with her guitar before moving to London to refine her original sound. With this run of releases, Suze Harper has announced herself as one to watch.
