Trauma Party confront the misinformation age with Because You've Been Good
It's a strange old time to be alive. You need only tune into the news to hear all about it. Or is that just misinformation? What about the economics of survival? Politics for dinner? How would we know? It's a constant flood of noise spilling into our minds.
The world may be confusing. There is power in how we respond to it. Trauma Party hammer this message home with their latest EP Because You've Been Good.
Across four tracks, the Waiheke based post punk outfit wrestle with depression, political propaganda, economic frustration and existential doubt. The songs are punk anthems that find joy, community and defiance amid the noise of modern life.
The EP begins with Are We In Heaven. A classic post punk anthem with contrasting rhythms across the verses and chorus that break it up to great effect. The song sounds like a dark dive bar and the smell of stale smoke. Beneath the driving energy sits a question about how we arrived at this moment, personally and collectively, wrapped in a chorus built for shouted singalongs.
Speak To Me has a captivating quality from the opening riff. It layers on through staccato rhythmic verses before the chorus cries "Speak To Me" like an echoing call for help. The track explores loneliness and manipulation in equal measure, capturing the way vulnerable people can become lost in a world overwhelmed with competing voices.
Sharks moves with greater melodic complexity. The guitars wiggle and tease between the vocal lines. There is more space here and the band feels completely locked in. Its imagery of predators lurking beneath the surface paints a vivid picture of depression, while the relentless groove refuses to let the darkness have the final say.
Roll Up brings it home with an epic chasm of sound smashing through anything in its path. Big riffs collide with vocals that are equal parts protest shout and gritty snarl. Forceful drums and chaotic guitar create a sense of tension that perfectly matches the song's uncompromising message.
Because You've Been Good thrives in spaces of contrast. At times it recalls the early Red Hot Chili Peppers before Blood Sugar Sex Magik, trading slap bass for scratchy punk funk guitars and sharp post punk edges. Across the EP, heavy themes collide with rebellious energy taking aim at political spin, manufactured outrage and the reshaping of truth itself. Big questions meet bigger riffs, resulting in a release that acknowledges the weight of life while refusing to be crushed by it.
