In the basement of an old heritage building, The Mothership was made for live music
Originally constructed in 1927, the South British Insurance Building is an unlikely location for an underground music venue. And yet, beneath Shortland Street in Auckland's CBD, The Mothership has established itself as a fixture in the city's live music landscape since opening in July 2022. With a capacity of 300, the venue has hosted a mix of international and local acts, including Basement Jaxx, DJ Sneak, Grooverider, Netsky and Cosmic Psychos. Known for its strong production standards and artist-focused approach, The Mothership was built with the goal of creating a space designed by people who understand live music from the inside out.
How the Venue Started
The Mothership was founded by long-time friends Andy and Patrick, whose careers intersected through New Zealand's music industry. Patrick is one half of drum and bass duo State of Mind, while Andy previously established venues including Ink, Coherent and The Yot Club in Raglan. When an opportunity arose to create a new venue in Auckland, the pair combined their experience and shared vision to launch The Mothership.
Who Runs It
The venue is supported by a team with experience across live events, touring, venue operations and creative production. Andy leads bookings and venue development, while Patrick oversees sound and production. Venue manager Courtnee brings eight years of experience from Neck of the Woods. Art director Chris Stapp shapes the venue's visual identity, Jamayne manages audio and visual documentation of performances, and lighting technician Matt King draws on more than two decades of touring experience with acts including Shapeshifter and Fat Freddy's Drop.
Why It Matters
The Mothership sees its role as extending beyond simply hosting events. The venue focuses on supporting artists, promoters and audiences while contributing to the long-term health of Auckland's live music ecosystem. By working closely with promoters and tailoring each event to its specific needs, the team aims to create an environment where everyone involved can deliver their best work.
What Gap It Fills
The venue was created to provide a professionally equipped room that balances high-end production with a close connection between performers and audiences. Its team-driven approach offers promoters access to experienced support across production, operations and event delivery, helping bring a wide range of shows to the city.
What the Space Is Like
Located in the basement level of 13 Shortland Street, The Mothership combines an intimate room size with large-scale production capabilities. The space is constantly evolving through visual design, lighting and technical setup, creating a welcoming environment for artists, promoters and audiences.
