Sophie Aston's Indigo is fearless, vulnerable and larger than life itself

Waiheke Island is a hub of creative activity and it's no different when it comes to music. Local artist Sophie Aston has released a number of captivating songs to date including the uplifting yet vulnerable Stardust, just earlier this year. Her latest offering, Indigo is dynamic and expansive. It could be my pick of the bunch.

The song has a spaciousness that sounds like it is sung from the inside of a canyon - a plea into the nothingness that stretches beyond. There is reverb cascading, and it builds with attitude, surmounting in the cry of 'Indigo'.

'All the cruelty and the kindness that follows, it is my duty to use time that I've borrowed', 'When you use empathy as a weapon, what the fuck am I suppose to believe' - there is strong use of emotive lyricism that fuses with the music to create a powerful and beautiful song, it has a mesmerising quality that reels you in.

There is a fearlessness to Indigo. It has a lyrical heaviness, but this doesn't drag the song down. Instead frustration, doubt and hurt become strength and resolve. Sophie has mastered the a knack of taking personal vulnerability and giving it enough space to become something larger than itself.

Indigo shows Sophie Aston continuing to rise. It is raw, dramatic and full of feeling. I get the sense that there is plenty more to come from this Waiheke-based songwriter.
