Sophie-Maude on the spontaneity of living life to the fullest
Sophie-Maude is making the most of her 20s. Her recently released single, Be Something, is all about making it count. The track was inspired by summer flings, traveling, and people who stay with us long after they’re gone. The video appropriately captures this vibe, following four friends on a night out from sunset to sunrise before they go seperate ways. Following it's release, Sophie-Maude gave us the lowdown on growing up in Mount Maunganui, backing herself and what comes next.
It feels like Be Something’ is a more grown-up version of Sophie-Maude. What does the song say about where you are as an artist?
To me, Be Something is about living your 20’s to your fullest. I guess in a way that speaks more to me as a person! I struggled to live a normal childhood living on the spectrum, which is why living my life to the fullest is so important to me.
The song captures a summer fling that burns bright but doesn’t necessarily last. What drew you to that idea?
The people who inspired me are my spontaneous travel friends from all around the world. They live day-by-day and I admire how they don’t stick to a routine. Creating relationships with strangers whether, or not they last forever, sounds so exciting and liberating to me. These 'travel-friends' of mine will always hold a big place in my heart, no matter how far away they are from me.
You're from the Mount. How does life at home influence your music?
I love my home so much. I will always come back to the Mount for the summer as there’s truly no place I’d rather be! To me, I feel very connected with this part of Tauranga and its culture. I think just the feeling of freedom I feel here finds a way to wind itself into my music and character.
The video follows a fleeting connection between four young people. What did you want to capture about that experience?
It was important to me that the viewers felt a sense of longing for these fleeting connections and hopefully inspire them to live their life to the fullest. Whether that be in their friendships, relationships, or pushing themselves to do a bungee jump!
You're still early in your career. When you compare yourself now with the Sophie-Maude who first started making music, what feels most different?
Six years is a long time, and so much has happened since then. I think the main thing that’s adapted through time is me acknowledging that having a career in music is fully possible, I just have to keep playing my cards right. My younger self didn’t believe I’d have a quarter of the supportive followers that I have now! Anything is possible if you decide you want it to be.
If ‘Be Something’ is a snapshot of where you are now, what do you think the next chapter sounds like?
My next chapter is going bigger and bolder than I’ve ever done before. Bringing inspiration from my French heritage and making my audience feel a sense of self-worth and shining confidence that I think this small country lacks, compared to other countries around the world. I want people to finally feel sure of themselves and comfortable in their own skin.
