AI accusation culture is simmering throughout the Aotearoa music scene

Almost everyone knows about the controversy surrounding AI use to create music. Some have embraced it, even right at the top of the food chain. But for most, especially artists and those of us who give a shit about creative integrity, the concept as a whole is quite revolting.

Everyday this technology is evolving. As are the opinions we hold about it. I saw something earlier this week that really made the hairs on the back of my neck prick up.

A New Zealand radio station pulled an artist's catalogue from their playlists and publicly shamed them for using AI to create music. It was brutal. They completely ripped the artist and took the position of moral integrity.

The only thing is, the artist never used AI.

Let's unpack this for a minute.

It's divisive. How on earth can the creative industries move forward if we're too busy squabbling among ourselves and pointing the blame? Firstly, AI or not - we need to share the love. Sure, there are some strong opinions about AI use, but it is not okay to make an example of someone in this way.

As our world becomes more fractured and niche, respect is more important than ever. Ironically, it seems there is less and less of that going around. My thoughts - live and let live. Give power to that which you believe in and respect the rights of others to hold a different opinion. AI is here whether we like it or not - the best way to create the future you want is to live it.

The need for verification is becoming more and more urgent. Ultimately this issue has stemmed from a lack of transparency. With a globalised standard for non-AI music verification we could all enjoy the confidence that our music consumption is fueled by people and their unique experiences - not a machine.
