Aubrie Mitchell discusses impossible self-standards and other cultural norms

Aubrie Mitchell has a knack for turning the things that get under her skin into music. Her latest single, Where She Goes, digs into the pressures of holding impossible standards and an idealised version of yourself - a byproduct of modern culture I'm sure many will find relatable.

The Auckland artist takes a hands-on approach across her craft. She does it all -songwriting, production and audio engineering. With a haunting music video to match the song's darker themes, Where She Goes really makes a statement.

Following the song's release, Aubrie gave us her take on the pressures women face, how she approaches production, and the inspiration behind the video.

You recently released 'Where She Goes', tell us some more about what the song is about?

The song centres around my feelings of how I view myself, particularly never being able to live up to my own expectations. As if I'm always second place to the idealised image I have in my head. I feel like the song serves as a lament for this cage I put myself in but also as an escape to realise I'll never reach first place and that's okay. It also speaks to the unfair standards and expectations placed on women in society and how detrimental it can be to younger generations. If anyone relates to the topics in the song then I hope they find solace knowing that many people feel the same way. 

You're also an audio engineer and did all the production work on the track. How does this impact the way you approach writing?

Since I started making music, I've always written and produced at the same time, so my approach is to always let the production influence the way I write. This usually means I end up with a song that evolves sonically over time as I chip away at different elements. 

In your own words what makes a great song?

I think if it has a catchy tune that you can't get out of your head makes a great song, but I also think a song that moves you emotionally, and in whatever emotion that might be, merits the good song title. 

The music video for 'Where She Goes' has a real haunting quality. Tell us about the inspiration for this...

For the music video we drew inspiration from medieval, gothic, and victorian styles. We used an infrared lens to elevate the haunting nature of the shots and create an eerie feel to the performance. I wanted to incorporate mirrored imagery to represent the critic within.

The NZ scene is buzzing with talent. Who are your favourite local artists?

I'm the biggest fan of Paige and always have been and I've been loving all of Katie-Lee's songs recently!
